TradingView Review: Which Plan a Forex or Gold Trader Needs
TradingView's free tier allows two indicators and one chart. We went through every plan, from Essential at $14.95 a month to Ultimate, to find the point where paying stops being optional.
8.6/10
The best charting package a retail forex or gold trader can buy, and the free tier is enough to learn on. Most people who chart one or two pairs need only Essential at $14.95 a month, mainly for more indicators and alerts. It is not a broker, so it cannot fix your execution costs.
Best for
Discretionary forex and gold traders who want serious charts without a broker lock-in
100 million traders and investors (TradingView figure)
Most traders who pay for TradingView pay too early. Others hold out on the free tier until the fourth stacked indicator forces a decision at the worst moment. The useful question is not "is it good", because it is, but "which limit will I hit first".
What the free tier gives a forex trader
Basic is genuinely usable. You get one chart per tab, two indicators per chart, five thousand historical bars, two simultaneous chart connections, and ads. We loaded a live gold chart without an account upgrade and the price ran normally.

Two indicators is tighter than it sounds, but it is enough for a common setup: a moving average plus RSI on EUR/USD, or a single volatility band on gold. Independent reviewers, including Stockbrokers.com, reach the same conclusion: the limits are irritating, not crippling, for someone who trades one method.
The forex screener is also free. It lists the crosses with performance columns, which is handy for finding the pair that moved instead of the pair you always watch.

The price ladder, in numbers
We read the prices straight from the pricing page. Billed monthly, Essential costs $14.95, Plus $34.95, Premium $69.95 and Ultimate $239.95. Billed annually, the monthly equivalents drop to $12.95, $29.95, $59.95 and $199.95.

What each rung adds:
Essential: 2 charts per tab, 5 indicators, 20 price alerts and 20 technical alerts, no ads, ten thousand bars, second-based intervals.
Plus: 4 charts, 10 indicators, 100 alerts of each kind.
Go with the pattern of your own habits, not the marketing.
You trade one method on a few pairs: stay on Basic for a month. If you keep bumping into two indicators, take Essential.
You watch a session with several pairs open: Plus. Four charts on one screen lets you see EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY and gold together, which is what most session traders want from a multi-chart layout.
You run many alerts across a watchlist: Premium's 400 alerts is the reason to buy it, more than the extra charts.
Ultimate: we cannot make the case for a retail trader who is not full time. At $239.95 a month billed monthly it is a professional cost.
Paying annually saves $24 a year on Essential and $60 on Plus, but only commit after you have used the plan through a volatile month.
Pine Script, ideas and the feed question
The reason TradingView won the charting argument is the crowd around it. Public scripts, written in its Pine language, cover everything from session-range boxes to order-block markers, and you can read the source before you add one to a chart. That library is free to use, but each script you add counts against your indicator limit, which is the quiet reason Basic feels tight after a week.
Prices come from data feeds chosen per symbol, and forex and gold quotes are contributed by several brokers and liquidity sources. The number on your chart can therefore differ by a fraction of a pip from the number on your broker's platform. For entries it is a reminder to trade off your broker's price, and to test stops with that gap in mind.
The platform also lists brokers you can connect and trade through from the chart. We treat that as a convenience, not a recommendation: check the broker's costs and regulator before you link an account.
What it will not do
TradingView draws prices; it does not tighten spreads. You still pay your broker's costs, and you still take the risk. Leveraged forex and gold CFDs can lose money quickly, and a good chart does not change the odds of a trade. Nothing here is personal advice. Also note the Basic tier carries ads and a small alert allowance, so a trader who relies on alerts to catch a breakout will outgrow it.
Our practical advice is to treat the first month as a trial with a written list of the limits you hit, and buy only the plan that removes those. The verdict is simple. Everyone should open the free account. Most active traders should end up on Essential or Plus. Only a few need anything above that, and they will already know who they are.
