Interactive Brokers Review: Forex Priced Like a Bank, Sold Like a Puzzle
IBKR charges 0.2 basis points on currency trades, with a $2 floor per order, on top of interbank spreads. That is superb at 100,000 units and poor at 10,000. We ran the numbers.
7.9/10
For a retail trader placing 100,000-unit tickets or more, IBKR delivers some of the lowest all-in forex costs available: about 0.63 pips round turn on EUR/USD in independent testing. The $2 minimum per order punishes small tickets, and Trader Workstation is built for professionals. Beginners should look elsewhere first.
Best for
Experienced traders using 25,000-unit or larger tickets who value low cost and regulation
Commission of 0.2 basis points of trade value, on top of raw interbank pricing

One account reaches currencies, stocks, options, futures and bonds worldwide
Idle cash earns interest at rates the broker publishes, up to USD 3.38% on its page
A large listed group with a long record and regulation in several regions
What does not
A $2 minimum per order makes tickets under 100,000 units expensive
Trader Workstation has a steep learning curve for a currency-only trader
Interbank pricing starts at 20,000 units and the minimum order is 25,000
No fixed spreads and no simple copy-trading or social features

Retail forex brokers mostly hide their fee in the spread. Interactive Brokers does the opposite, and the difference is worth learning even if you never open an account there.
One line of arithmetic explains the whole product
The commission on spot currencies is 0.20 basis point of trade value for monthly volume up to $1 billion, with a minimum of USD 2.00 per order at that first tier. The company's page says it prefers a transparent commission to marking up quotes and charging nothing, "as is the practice with many currency brokers."

Work it through. A 100,000-unit trade is worth about $100,000 in base currency terms, so 0.2 basis point is $2.00, exactly the minimum. That is 0.2 pips a side on EUR/USD. ForexBrokers.com measured an average EUR/USD spread of 0.226 pips plus $4.00 commission per lot round turn, which it puts at 0.626 pips all in. Few retail brokers we know of beat that on a standard lot.
Now shrink the ticket. On 25,000 units the $2 floor is still $2, but a pip is worth $2.50, so you pay 0.8 pip each way and 1.6 pips round turn, before the spread. On 10,000 units the floor swallows more than the commission model can justify. The pricing is built for size.
The order-size catch
The interbank venue, IDEALPRO, has a minimum order of 25,000 units, and independent testers report interbank pricing from roughly 20,000, with smaller orders filling as odd lots at slightly worse prices. A trader risking a hundred dollars on a 2% stop will rarely place tickets that large without leverage, and leverage is where accounts fail. Leveraged trading carries a real risk of losing more than a deposit in some jurisdictions, so this is not a product to size up just to escape the minimum.

The Other Fees page: IBKR states there are no account minimums and no inactivity fees.
The good news is on the account side. The company states no account minimum and no inactivity fee, so leaving the account idle for a year costs nothing extra.
Trader Workstation is the price of admission
Currency traders arriving from MetaTrader or a broker's web app will find Trader Workstation, or TWS, dense. The company describes it as built for active and global traders who need real-time risk oversight and full market visibility. In plain terms: rows of tabs, order tickets with many fields, and a menu structure that assumes you already know what you want.

Nobody should call it beginner friendly. The reward is depth: conditional orders, an account view that shows margin in real time, and access to stocks, options, futures and bonds from the same login. If you only ever trade EUR/USD and gold, that breadth is wasted and the learning curve is a bill you pay in time.
The cash side, which forex traders forget
Uninvested money earns interest on the broker's tiered schedule, and its homepage advertises up to USD 3.38% on idle cash and margin loans from USD 4.38%. These headline figures move with benchmark rates, so check the live table before deciding anything.

Interest is paid on positive settled cash balances at tiered rates.
For someone holding a few thousand in an account between trades, that beats most brokers that pay nothing. It does not offset a bad trade.
How it compares with a raw spread broker
Raw spread brokers on MetaTrader also split cost into spread and commission, and many charge about $7 per round-turn lot. Against that, IBKR's $4 per lot is lower, but the raw brokers let you trade from 0.01 lots without a floor that changes the maths. So the comparison depends on how you trade. A scalper opening ten one-lot tickets a day will save real money at IBKR. A swing trader opening two 0.1-lot tickets a week will pay more per unit than at a plain raw account, and will not be helped by the deeper tools.
There is also a question of what you hold beyond currencies. Because one login covers stocks, futures and bonds, some people use IBKR as a single home for a whole portfolio and treat forex as one sleeve. That is the strongest argument for putting up with the interface.
Who should use it
Use IBKR if you place tickets of 100,000 units or more, you want a large listed broker with a long track record, and you can tolerate a serious platform. Skip it if you trade micro lots, if you want a friendly mobile-first experience, or if you have not yet found a profitable method on a demo account. Cheaper execution does not fix a losing strategy. Leveraged forex can lose money fast, and nothing here is personal advice. Confirm which IBKR entity would hold your account and which regulator covers it before you fund anything.
